10 Movies and Shows to Watch on Netflix and Prime
Along with trailers for a sneak peek
If nothing else, there is one routine that I've been adhering to, binge-watching #series and #movies. And if someone would be paying me to do this, my pocket would be overflowing right now. In light of this, I almost forget to use my phone. My laptop is my new mate now. Be it for writing or watching stuff, I've been sticking to it like a stamp. To believe me take a look at my phone screen time for the week.
So without building up much, I would straightaway jump to the list of shows and movies I've created for you to enjoy. I am still in between a few of these shows and movies but couldn't hold myself from including them.
1. Madam Secretary
Seasons: 6 (5 available on Prime as on date)
The series is an American political drama about a woman Elizabeth who was a CIA analyst for 20 years and then a professor. She gets appointed as a Secretary to the president to replace the existing secretary who dies in a plane crash. It is about her journey, sudden changes in her life, and what she experiences in the process of finally becoming the President (in season 6) and her life post that.
2. Modern Love
Season: 1 (season 2 most likely to premiere in October 2020)
It is a romantic series inspired by the New York Times weekly column Modern Love. Each episode beautifully depicts a short story of the challenges that people face in modern relationships and commitments. If you want to watch something that would constantly keep a smile on your face, then this one is a catch.
3. The Kicks
Genre: Drama/comedy (recommended for kids as well)
The story revolves around a girl Devin, who is a soccer player and moves to a different city with her family where she is having trouble connecting with her soccer team in her new school. She has been the best player in her former school and finds out that the new team is nowhere close to winning a match. Here begins her journey to unite with her fellow players, become their leader, while encouraging them to be a winning team. A fun and engaging show to watch with your kids.
4. When They See Us
Genre: Crime Drama (based on a true event)
The show is based on a true event that took place in 1989 when 4 young boys were falsely accused of assaulting a woman in Central Park, New York. With each episode, you will feel the pain that they and their family go through to prove them innocent. The series ends with all the 4 boys returning home years after facing the life behind the bars into a different world. I would suggest you watch this only if you are willing to see the harsh reality that will leave an impact on your mind.
Genre: Crime Drama (inspired by true events)
The series is about a girl who approaches a police officer for being assaulted and is unable to completely recall the incident due to which she is charged with lying about it. The episodes will further take you into the investigations made by 2 lady police officers in this case to unleash the truth. If you are looking for something thrilling and engaging, check this out.
6. Little Women
Genre: Drama/Romance (based on the book little women, recommended for kids as well)
It is an autobiography of the author and her 4 sisters. Some of you might have read the book in school. The movie is a beautiful visual depiction of the same. The story is about the bond between these sisters which goes through phases and remains solid till the end. The movie is mostly shot in the past with each of them separately recalling it in their present life. The author who eventually becomes a writer publishes her first book at the end of the movie about these phases. If you are ready to shed a few tears with a smile, go ahead with this one.
7. Marriage Story
It is a story of a couple, one is an actor and the other a stage director, who have a complicated marriage which is heading for separation. The movie has a slow pace but the characters will keep you involved. It is a mix of all emotions - love, hatred, joy, and sorrow. The performances are powerful, and worth watching.
8. The Old Guard
Genre: Action Thriller
Status: Currently Watching
If you are looking for full action and drama, then this one is for you. Honestly, I am not a fan of such movies like Akhil is and so we end up having very few options when it comes to watching something together. But somehow I've liked it so far and he'll be happy to know. It is an American superhero film of a team of immortal old warriors who have self-healing capacity. It's unreal but interesting to watch.
9. The Meyerowitz Stories
Status: In the queue
Who doesn't like a combination of both drama & comedy and if you are looking for one, then this is a must-watch. I haven't seen it but have read so much about it that I had to recommend this one. Plus being a huge fan of Adam Sandler & Ben Stiller, I had to include it on my list. I don't remember how many times I have seen 50 First Dates (available on Prime) and Along Came Polly (available on Netflix)
This movie is a family drama set in New York (a sudden realization that most of these recommended stories are based in New York), about a man and his 3 kids who have troubles and tensions in their own lives and how they live under the shadow of their father.
Genre: Crime Thriller (inspired by true events)
Status: In the queue
A movie about a serial killer (who was for real) who is obsessed with killing people and how he and his search becomes a burden on everyone who is involved in this case. Recommended if you are a fan of Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
